Automotive education for real people
The Beginner's
Car Garage
Learn enough about your vehicle to understand recommendations, ask better questions, and make confident decisions — without becoming a mechanic.
Garage Rule #1
You are allowed to ask questions.
A good repair explanation should tell you what the part does, what is wrong, how urgent it is, and what happens if you wait.

Know Your Car
Brakes, without the jargon
1 · What are they?Your brakes use friction to slow the wheels. Pads and rotors are common wear components.
2 · What might you notice?Squealing, grinding, vibration while braking, a changed pedal feel, or longer stopping distance.
3 · What proves wear?Ask for pad measurements and the condition or measurements of the rotors instead of relying on “they look bad.”
Say this at the shop
“Can you show me my brake-pad measurements and explain why the rotors are being recommended too?”
Decode My Estimate
$1,842 does not mean everything is equally urgent.
🛑 Safety / urgentItems that can affect safe operation or risk significant immediate damage deserve first attention.
⏳ Needed soonLegitimate work that may allow some planning. Ask what condition or measurement determines timing.
🔧 Maintenance / monitorScheduled maintenance and items that can be watched should be separated from urgent repairs.
Say this at the shop
“If I can't do everything today, show me what is safety-critical, what can wait, and why.”

Practice before someone is waiting for your answer.
Advisor: “Your front brake pads are at 2 millimeters. I recommend replacing the pads and rotors today.”

They Said I Need…
Don't approve or decline yet. Let's understand the recommendation.
Choose what the shop recommended. This tool teaches questions to ask; it does not diagnose your vehicle.
Warning Light Academy
A light came on. Your first job is to identify it — not guess the repair.
🔴 Red / severe warningSome red warnings can indicate a condition requiring prompt action. Safely stop when appropriate and consult your owner's manual or qualified help.
🟠 Amber / yellowOften means a system needs attention or diagnosis. It is information, not proof that a particular part must be replaced.
✨ Flashing mattersA flashing warning can carry different urgency than a steady one. Note exactly what the light is doing and how the vehicle behaves.
Say this at the shop
“What does this specific warning indicate, and what testing will identify the actual cause?”
